A Background Check on Phillip Garrido finally lead to Jaycee Lee Dugard being released from 18 years of imprisonment and her two daughters gaining their freedom
Liza Campbell, special events manager at the University of California, Berkley, was spoken to by Garrido with his two girls in tow. A conversation occurred regarding Garrido using a hall at the University for one of his events. She had another commitment, so she asked him to return the following day.
When discussing his function Garrido was exuberant and passionate . The girls ought have been at school. Garrido's two daughters told Liza they were home schooled. But they were very emotionally disconnected. Liza’s instincts were on red alert. She had a gut feeling something was wrong.
Liza didn't just sit back. Thinking, "Oh that is not my job!" She ran a background check in response to those instincts . This check showed that Garrido was on parole following a rape conviction and was a registered sex offender. Liza requested that Police Officer, Allison Jacobs, join her at the meeting the next day.
Chatting to the girls Allison was on the lookout for any give away signs of child abuse. It wasn't Allisons Police intuition as much as her motherly instincts that rang alarm bells. Jacobs knew something was wrong. Allison was worried for these little girls. Disclosing the meeting to Garrido's parole officer and the presence of the two girls Allison couldn't have been prepared for what happened next. The whole world reeled at the stunning reply. “Garrido doesn't have any daughters!”
Allison’s heart sank down to her stomach!
Lets all pause for a moment and consider. What if you don’t know why but you just had a bad feeling about someone? But rather than being passive you ran a background check that not only cleared up a long standing FBI case but put someone in prison that needed to be there and gave others their long deserved freedom.
We should all be so proud and grateful to Liza and Allison for acting on those protective motherly feelings.
