After Phillip Garrido had a background check carried out on him three women gained their freedom
Liza Campbell, special events manager at the University of California, Berkley, was approached by Garrido with his two girls in tow. Garrido wanted to find out about using the University campus facilities for putting on his activity. She had another commitment, so she asked him to return the following day.
Liza was struck by the passion that Garrido spoke with when he discussed the function he wanted to stage on the University campus. His teenage daughters were of school age but not at school. Garrido’s two daughters told Liza they were home schooled. But they were very emotionally disconnected. Liza just knew there was something about the two girls that wasn't legitimate.
Liza didn’t just sit back. Thinking, "Oh that is not my job!" She ran a background check in response to those suspect feelings. This check declared that Garrido was on parole after a rape conviction and was a registered sex offender. At Liza’s request Police Officer ,Allison Jacobs, sat in on the following meeting between Liza and Phillip Garrido and his two daughters.
At the next meeting Jacobs began to engage the girls in a chat, observing any signs of abuse. Slowly Jacobs motherly instincts took over. Jacobs knew something was wrong. She was worried for these little girls. Relaying the meeting to Garrido’s parole officer and the presence of the two children Jacobs couldn’t have been prepared for what happened next. Back came the appalling news. “Garrido doesn’t have any daughters!”
Allison’s heart sank down to her stomach!
Lets all stop for a moment and consider. How would you feel if you started with a suspicion that you couldn’t quite fathom out?? But your suspicions lead you to carrying out a background check that not only unravelled an 18 year old FBI case but gave a mother and her two daughters a taste of freedom for the very first time.
We should all be so proud and grateful to Liza and Allison for acting on those protective motherly feelings.
