When Phillip Garrido had a background check carried out on him three women were set free
Liza Campbell, special events manager at the University of California, Berkley, was approached by Garrido with his two girls in tow. A discussion took place concerning Garrido hiring a hall at the University for one of his events. She had another commitment, so she asked him to return the following day.
When explaining his event Garrido was excited and passionate . His teenage daughters were of school age but not at school. The girls told Liza they were home schooled. But they were very emotionally disconnected. Liza just knew there was something about the girls that wasn't OK.
By chance Liza responded to her instincts that something wasn’t right and ran a background check on Phillip Garrido. The report came back and Liza discovered that Garrido was a registered sex offender on parole for violent sex offences and kidnapping. At Liza’s request Police Officer ,Allison Jacobs, attended the following meeting between Liza and Garrido.
Talking to the girls Allison was on the lookout for any give away signals of child abuse. The hairs on her neck stood up as her motherly protectiveness came to the fore. Jacobs knew something was wrong. Jacobs was worried for these little girls. The response shocked Allison. She contacted Garrido’s parole officer after the meeting and told him of Garrido’s two daughters . We all reeled from theappalling answer. “Garrido doesn’t have any daughters!”
Allison’s heart sank down to her stomach!
Just let us all take a deep breath and ponder this . How would you feel if you began with a suspicion that you couldn’t quite answer?? But rather than take no action you carried out a background check that not only solved a long standing FBI case but put someone in jail that needed to be there and gave others their long deserved freedom.
We should all be so proud and grateful to Liza and Allison for acting on those protective motherly feelings.
