A Background Check on Phillip Garrido ultimately lead to Jaycee Lee Dugard being set free from eighteen years of captivity and her two daughters gaining their freedom
Liza Campbell, special events manager at the University of California, Berkley, was approached by Garrido with his two girls in tow.He spoke to Liza about staging an event at the campus. She had another commitment, so she asked him to return the following day.
Garrido was buoyant, impassioned, and full of excitement about the event he wanted to hold. It was one o’clock but the girls were not at school. His daughters claimed that both parents schooled them at home. His daughters were looking controlled, unobtrusive, and unemotional. Something just wasn’t right. Liza knew it. Her motherly protectiveness had kicked in.
Liza didn’t just sit back. Thinking, "Oh that is not my job!" She did a background check in response to those instincts . The statement came back and Liza ascertained that Garrido was a registered sex offender on parole for violent sex offences and kidnapping. Liza then contacted Allison Jacobs, Police Officer, explained the strangeness of the meeting with Garrido, and asked her to sit in on the meeting that she had organised for the next day.
Chatting to the two sisters Jacobs was on the lookout for any give away signals of child abuse. It wasn’t her Police instincts as much as her motherly instincts that kicked in. Jacobs knew something was wrong. She was worried for these little girls. Relaying the meeting to Garrido’s parole officer and the presence of the two daughters Jacobs couldn’t have been prepared for the response. No one could be prepared for the shocking reply. “Garrido doesn’t have any daughters!”
Allison’s heart sank down to her stomach!
Lets all pause for a moment and consider. What if you don’t know why but you just had a bad feeling about someone? But this time you acted on your suspicions,conducted a background check, cleared up an FBI case, solved a terrible crime, put that person in jail and freed that person’s captives.
We should all be so proud and grateful to Liza and Allison for acting on those protective motherly feelings.
