A Background Check on Phillip Garrido lead to Jaycee Lee Dugard being set free from 18 years of captivity.
A canny Liza Campbell carried out a background check on Garrido because he just made her feel unsettled. The report told her that in fact he was a registered sex offender and was on parole for a violent rape conviction. It was this ‘suspicion’ coupled with a ‘background check’ that lead to Jaycee being freed after 18 years of captivity.

In more detail. The events as they unfolded started with Phillip Garrido discussing with Liza Campbell, special events manager at the University of California, Berkley, about holding an event at the campus. She had another commitment, so she asked him to return the following day.
Liza believed the encounter strange enough to carry out a background check on Garrido, revealing his past history. Campbell then asked Allison Jacobs, Police Officer, to sit in on the meeting the next day.
After this second meeting Jacobs informed Garrido’s parole officer and the events as you know them were exposed .
