Doing a background check on Phillip Garrido ended eighteen years of depravity
Liza Campbell, special events manager at the University of California, Berkley, was accosted by Garrido with his two girls in tow. Garrido had to find out about using the University campus hall for putting on his activity. She had another commitment, so she asked him to return the following day.
When talking over his function Garrido was enthusiastic and passionate . Garrido’s two daughters needed to have been at school. They claimed that both parents taught them at home. But they were very emotionally disconnected. Something just wasn’t right. Liza knew it. Her motherly instincts had kicked in.
Liza just didn’t care for Garrido. Instincts told her that something just wasn’t right about those girls and so she carried out a background check on him. The results came back and Liza ascertained that Garrido was a registered sex offender on parole for violent sex offences and kidnapping. Liza requested that Police Officer, Allison Jacobs, sit in on the meeting the following day.
At the following meeting Jacobs started to engage the girls in a chat, checking for any signs of abuse. The hairs on her neck stood up as her motherly intuition came to the front. Jacobs knew something was wrong. She was worried for these little girls. What happened next stunned her. She contacted Garrido’s parole officer after the meeting and told him of Garrido’s two daughters . The whole world reeled at the shocking reply. “Garrido doesn’t have any daughters!”
Allison’s heart sank down to her stomach!
Just stop for a moment and think. How would you feel if your instincts told you that something was wrong about a person? But this time you acted on your instincts, ran a background check, solved an FBI case, solved a terrible crime, put that person in jail and freed that person’s captives.
We should all be so proud and grateful to Liza and Allison for acting on those protective motherly feelings.
