Doing a background check on Phillip Garrido ended eighteen years of depravity
Liza Campbell, special events manager at the University of California, Berkley, was approached by Garrido with his two girls in tow. A discussion took place regarding Garrido using a hall at the University for one of his events. She had another commitment, so she asked him to return the following day.
When talking over his event Garrido was enthusiastic and passionate . It was one o’clock but Garrido’s two children were not at school. Both girls said they were home schooled. Both girls should signs of emotional immaturity, disconnected from the world, and a stunted development. Something just wasn’t right. Liza knew it. Her motherly protectiveness had kicked in.
Liza just didn’t care for Garrido. Her feelings told her that something just wasn’t right about his daughters and so she conducted a background check on Phillip Garrido. This check disclosed that Garrido was on parole after a rape conviction and was a registered sex offender. Liza requested that Police Officer, Allison Jacobs, sit in on the meeting the following day.
Chatting to the two sisters Allison was waiting for any give away signs of child abuse. It wasn’t Allisons Police intuition as much as her motherly instincts that made her take notice. Jacobs knew something was wrong. She was worried for these little girls. Disclosing the meeting to Garrido’s parole officer and the presence of the two daughters Allison couldn’t have been prepared for the response. Back came the astonishing news. “Garrido doesn’t have any daughters!”
Allison’s heart sank down to her stomach!
Just stop for a moment and think. What if you are not sure why but you just had a bad feeling about someone? But instead of doing nothing you conducted a background check that not only solved a long standing FBI case but put someone in prison that needed to be there and gave others their long deserved freedom.
We should all be so proud and grateful to Liza and Allison for acting on those protective motherly feelings
