A Background Check on Phillip Garrido finally lead to Jaycee Lee Dugard being set free from eighteen years of incarceration and her two daughters gaining their freedom
Liza Campbell, special events manager at the University of California, Berkley, was approached by Garrido with his two girls in tow. Garrido wanted to find out about using the University campus rooms for putting on his activity. She had another commitment, so she asked him to return the following day.
Liza was struck by the passion that Garrido spoke with when he discussed the event he wanted to hold on the University campus. Garrido’s two daughters needed to have been at school. His daughters claimed that both parents taught them at home. But they were very emotionally disconnected. Liza just felt there was something about the girls that wasn't legitimate.
Liza just didn’t care for Garrido. Her feelings told her that something just wasn’t right about those girls and so she carried out a background check on Garrido. The results came back and Liza ascertained that Garrido was a registered sex offender on parole for rape and kidnapping. At Liza’s request Police Officer ,Allison Jacobs, attended the following meeting between Liza and Phillip Garrido and his two daughters.
Chatting to the two daughters Jacobs was waiting for any give away signals of child abuse. Slowly her motherly instincts took over. Jacobs knew something was wrong. She was worried for these little girls. She telephoned Garrido’s parole officer and told him of the meeting and of the two daughters that Garrido had with him. The whole world reeled at the shocking reply. “Garrido doesn’t have any daughters!”
Allison’s heart sank down to her stomach!
Pause for a moment and think. How would you feel if you started with a suspicion that you couldn’t quite fathom out?? But rather than take no action you ran a background check that not only cleared up a long standing FBI case but put someone in prison that needed to be there and gave others their long deserved freedom.
We should all be so proud and grateful to Liza and Allison for acting on those protective motherly feelings.
