Background Check:brought Garrido’s reign of terror to an end

Carrying out a background check on Phillip Garrido ended eighteen years of depravity

Liza Campbell, special events manager at the University of California, Berkley, was approached by Garrido with his two girls in tow. A discussion occurred regarding Garrido hiring a hall at the University for one of his functions. She had another commitment, so she asked him to return the following day.

Garrido was elated, eager, and full of excitement about the function he wanted to stage. It was one o’clock but Garrido’s two children were not at school. They both told Liza they were home schooled. But they were very emotionally disconnected. Something just wasn’t right. Liza knew it. Her motherly protectiveness had kicked in.

Liza just didn’t care for Garrido. Her feelings told her that something just wasn’t right about his two children and so she carried out a background check on Garrido. This check revealed that Garrido was on parole following a rape conviction and was a registered sex offender. Liza then contacted Allison Jacobs, Police Officer, explained the strangeness of the meeting with Garrido, and asked Allison to sit in on the meeting that she had organised for tomorrow.

Talking to the girls Jacobs was watching for any give away signals of child abuse. Slowly her motherly instincts took over. Jacobs knew something was wrong. Jacobs was worried for these little girls. Reporting the meeting to Garrido’s parole officer and the presence of the two children Allison couldn’t have been prepared for the response. No one could be prepared for the appalling reply. “Garrido doesn’t have any daughters!”

Allison’s heart sank down to her stomach!

Just stop for a moment and think. How would you feel if you began with a suspicion that you couldn’t quite fathom out?? But this time you acted on your instincts,ran a background check, solved an FBI case, solved a terrible crime, put that person in jail and freed that person’s captives.
