A canny Liza Campbell ran a background check on Garrido because he just made her feel uneasy. The records declared he was a violent sex offender on parole. It was this background check that revealed to Liza who Garrido really was and gave Jaycee her life back.

In more detail. The story as it unfolded started with Phillip Garrido discussing with Liza Campbell, special events manager at the University of California, Berkley, about holding an event at the campus. She had another commitment, so she asked him to return the following day.
It was as a result of this initial meeting with Garrido that lead to Liza performing a background check on him and discovering his disturbing record. Campbell then asked Allison Jacobs, Police Officer, to sit in on the meeting the next day.
This resulted in Jacobs informing Garrido’s parole officer of the two daughters and then the whole sorry saga unfolded.
