A Background Check on Phillip Garrido lead to Jaycee Lee Dugard being set free from 18 years of captivity.
A canny Liza Campbell carried out a background check on Garrido because he just made her feel unsettled. The report showed he was a violent sex offender on parole. Jaycee’s freedom was a direct consequence of that background check. A background check carried out by a suspicious Liza Campbell.
Background checks are no longer the sole prerogative of the law enforcement agencies. The Freedom of Information Act and other changes in the Law, together with the advent of computers, the Internet, and online Background Check services, has resulted in all of us being able to carry out background checks on anyone. Thank goodness we can when it results in people like Jaycee getting her freedom after all these years, and monsters like Garrido being put behind bars.
I’m confused . What if! What if Liza Campbell didn’t or couldn't perform a Background Check on Garrido? What would have happened? How much longer would Jaycee have to suffer captivity? How long before these unfortunate girls gain their freedom?
In more detail. The events as they unfolded started with Phillip Garrido approaching Liza Campbell, special events manager at the University of California, Berkley, about holding an event at the campus. She had another commitment, so she asked him to return the following day.
It was as a result of this initial encounter with Garrido that lead to Liza operating a background check on him and revealing his disturbing record. Campbell then asked Allison Jacobs, Police Officer, to sit in on the meeting the next day.
The next step was that Jacobs told Garrido’s parole officer of the daughters. Then the World took notice.
Thank goodness we can now all carry out Background Checks when we have suspicions!
