A Background Check on Phillip Garrido ultimately lead to Jaycee Lee Dugard being freed from 18 years of incarceration and her two daughters gaining their freedom
Liza Campbell, special events manager at the University of California, Berkley, was accosted by Garrido with his two girls in tow.He questioned Liza about staging an event at the campus. She had another commitment, so she asked him to return the following day.
Garrido was buoyant, eager, and full of excitement about the function he wanted to organize. Garrido’s two daughters were of school age but not at school. Each girl said they were home schooled. The two daughters were pale, not at school and acted as if brainwashed. Liza’s instincts were on high alert. She had a gut feeling something was wrong.
Liza didn’t just do nothing. Thinking, "Oh that is not my job!" She ran a background check in response to those suspect feelings. The background check disclosed that Garrido was a violent rapist on parole. Liza requested that Police Officer, Allison Jacobs, join her at the meeting the next day.
Chatting to the girls Jacobs was waiting for any give away signals of child abuse. It wasn’t Allisons Police instincts as much as her motherly instincts that kicked in. Jacobs knew something was wrong. Jacobs was worried for these little girls. Relaying the meeting to Garrido’s parole officer and the presence of the two girls Jacobs couldn’t have been prepared for the reply. We all reeled from theshocking answer. “Garrido doesn’t have any daughters!”
Allison’s heart sank down to her stomach!
Just let us all take a deep breath and ponder this . What if you don’t know why but you just had a bad feeling about someone? But this time you acted on your feelings, carried out a background check, cracked an FBI case, solved a terrible crime, put that person in jail and freed that person’s captives.
We should all be so proud and grateful to Liza and Allison for acting on those protective motherly feelings
