After Phillip Garrido had a background check carried out on him three women gained their freedom
Liza Campbell, special events manager at the University of California, Berkley, was accosted by Garrido with his two girls in tow.He asked Liza about having an event at the campus. She had another commitment, so she asked him to return the following day.
When talking over his function Garrido was enthusiastic and passionate . The girls were of school age but not at school. His daughters said they were home schooled. Both girls should signs of emotional immaturity, disconnected from the world, and a stunted development. Something just wasn’t right. Liza knew it. Her motherly protectiveness had kicked in.
Liza just didn’t like Garrido. A mother’s desire to protect told her that something just wasn’t right about his daughters and so she carried out a background check on Garrido. This check disclosed that Garrido was on parole following a rape conviction and was a registered sex offender. Liza then contacted Allison Jacobs, Police Officer, explained the strangeness of the meeting with Garrido, and requested Allison to sit in on the meeting that she had organised for the next day.
Chatting to the two daughters Allison was watching for any give away signals of child abuse. Gradually Jacobs motherly instincts took over. Jacobs knew something was wrong. Jacobs was worried for these little girls. Disclosing the meeting to Garrido’s parole officer and the presence of the two girls Jacobs couldn’t have been prepared for what happened next. We all reeled from theshocking answer. “Garrido doesn’t have any daughters!”
Allison’s heart sank down to her stomach!
Just stop for a moment and think. How would you feel if you started with a suspicion that you couldn’t quite fathom out?? But your worries lead you to conduct a background check that not only solved an 18 year old FBI case but gave a mother and her two daughters a taste of freedom for the very first time.
We should all be so proud and grateful to Liza and Allison for acting on those protective motherly feelings.
