Background Check:brought Garrido’s reign of terror to an end

Doing a background check on Phillip Garrido ended 18 years of worry for Jaycee’s family

Liza Campbell, special events manager at the University of California, Berkley, was approached by Garrido with his two girls in tow.He questioned Liza about holding an event at the University. She had another commitment, so she asked him to return the following day.

Liza was struck by the passion that Garrido spoke with when he discussed the function he wanted to hold on the University campus. It was one o’clock but the girls were not at school. Garrido’s two daughters told Liza they were home schooled. The children were subdued, in the background, and unemotional. Liza just felt there was something about his children that wasn't legitimate.

Liza didn’t just sit back. Thinking, "Oh that is not my job!" She carried out a background check in response to those suspect feelings. The background check divulged that Garrido was a violent rapist on parole. At Liza’s request Police Officer ,Allison Jacobs, sat in on the subsequent meeting between Liza and Phillip Garrido.

At the next meeting Jacobs began to encourage the girls in conversation, checking for any signs of abuse. Gradually her motherly protectiveness took over. Jacobs knew something was wrong. Allison was worried for these little girls. The reply stunned her. She phoned Garrido’s parole officer after the meeting and told him of Garrido’s two daughters . Back came the astonishing news. “Garrido doesn’t have any daughters!”

Allison’s heart sank down to her stomach!

Lets all pause for a moment and consider. How would you feel if you started with a suspicion that you couldn’t quite put your finger on?? But instead of doing nothing you ran a background check that not only cleared up a long standing FBI case but put someone in jail that needed to be there and gave others their long deserved freedom.
