A Background Check on Phillip Garrido ultimately lead to Jaycee Lee Dugard being released from 18 years of captivity and her two daughters gaining their freedom
Liza Campbell, special events manager at the University of California, Berkley, was approached by Garrido with his two girls in tow. Garrido needed to find out about using the University campus rooms for putting on his event. She had another commitment, so she asked him to return the following day.
When explaining his function Garrido was enthusiastic and passionate . Garrido’s two daughters were of school age but not at school. Each girl said they were home schooled. Alarmingly catatonic. Liza just felt there was something about his children that wasn't OK.
Liza just didn’t like Garrido. A mother’s desire to protect told her that something just wasn’t right about those girls and so she carried out a background check on Garrido. The background check showed that Garrido was a violent rapist on parole. Liza then contacted Allison Jacobs, Police Officer, explained the strangeness of the meeting with Garrido, and asked Allison to sit in on the meeting that she had organised for tomorrow.
Jacobs was on the lookout for anything dubious, particularly child abuse. Slowly her motherly intuition took over. Jacobs knew something was wrong. Jacobs was worried for these little girls. She telephoned Garrido’s parole officer and told him of the meeting and of the two girls that Garrido had with him. The whole world reeled at the shocking reply. “Garrido doesn’t have any daughters!”
Allison’s heart sank down to her stomach!
Pause for a moment and think. How would you feel if you started with a suspicion that you couldn’t quite fathom out?? But this time you acted on your suspicions,ran a background check, solved an FBI case, solved a despicable crime, put that person in jail and freed that person’s captives.
We should all be so proud and grateful to Liza and Allison for acting on those protective motherly feelings.
