Once Phillip Garrido had a background check carried out on him three women were released from their hell
Liza Campbell, special events manager at the University of California, Berkley, was approached by Garrido with his two girls in tow. A talk took place regarding Garrido using a hall at the University for one of his events. She had another commitment, so she asked him to return the following day.
When explaining his function Garrido was excited and passionate . Garrido’s two daughters needed to have been at school. Each girl said they were home schooled. The girls were sallow, not at school and acted as if brainwashed. Liza’s instincts were on high alert. She had a gut feeling something was wrong.
Liza just didn’t feel right about Garrido. A mother’s desire to protect told her that something just wasn’t right about his two children and so she ran a background check on him. The background check revealed that Garrido was a violent rapist on parole. Liza then contacted Allison Jacobs, Police Officer, explained the strangeness of the meeting with Garrido, and asked her to sit in on the meeting that she had set up for the next day.
Allison was on the lookout for anything unusual, particularly child abuse. Gradually her motherly protectiveness took over. Jacobs knew something was wrong. Allison was worried for these little girls. She phoned Garrido’s parole officer and informed him of the meeting and of the two children that Garrido had with him. No one could be prepared for the shocking reply. “Garrido doesn’t have any daughters!”
Allison’s heart sank down to her stomach!
Lets all stop for a moment and consider. What if you are not sure why but you just had a bad feeling about someone? But rather than take no action you did a background check that not only solved a long standing FBI case but put someone in jail that needed to be there and gave others their long deserved freedom.
We should all be so proud and grateful to Liza and Allison for acting on those protective motherly feelings.
