It was a Background Check that gave Jaycee her freedom.
An astute Liza Campbell initiated a background check on Garrido because he just made her feel uncomfortable. Back came the result in fact he was a registered sex offender and was on parole for a violent rape conviction. It was this ‘suspicion’ coupled with a ‘background check’ that resulted in Jaycee being freed after 18 years of enslavement.
Background checks . Now we can all run a background check on anyone we are suspicious of just like Liza Campbell did. The Freedom of Information Act and other changes in the Law, together with the advent of computers, the internet, and online Background Check services, has resulted in all of us being able to carry out background checks on anyone. Thank goodness we can when it results in people like Jaycee getting her freedom from captivity, and monsters like Garrido being apprehended.
I find this all rather hard to take in. What if! Lets say Liza Campbell didn’t have access to a background check service? What would have happened? How much longer would Jaycee have to endure captivity? How long before these poor girls gain their freedom?
In more detail. The story as it unfolded started with Phillip Garrido approaching Liza Campbell, special events manager at the University of California, Berkley, about holding an event at the campus. She had another commitment, so she asked him to return the following day.
Liza considered the encounter bizarre enough to carry out a background check on Garrido, unearthing his past history. Campbell then asked Allison Jacobs, Police Officer, to sit in on the meeting the next day.
This culminated in Jacobs informing Garrido’s parole officer of the two daughters and then the whole sorry saga unfolded.
Background Checks are our right, can give us peace of mind, and have become our duty when our suspicions are aroused.
