A Background Check on Phillip Garrido ultimately lead to Jaycee Lee Dugard being set free from 18 years of captivity and her two daughters gaining their freedom
Liza Campbell, special events manager at the University of California, Berkley, was approached by Garrido with his two girls in tow. Garrido wanted to find out about using the University campus rooms for putting on his function. She had another commitment, so she asked him to return the following day.
Liza was impressed by the passion that Garrido spoke with when he discussed the event he wanted to hold on the University campus. It was one o’clock but his two daughters were not at school. Each girl said they were home schooled. But they were very emotionally disconnected. Liza’s instincts were on red alert. She had an uneasy feeling something was wrong.
By chance Liza responded to her feelings that something wasn’t right and carried out a background check on Garrido. The statement came back and Liza found out that Garrido was a registered sex offender on parole for rape and kidnapping. At Liza’s request Police Officer ,Allison Jacobs, attended the next meeting between Liza and Garrido.
At the following meeting Jacobs began to involve the girls in a chat, checking for any signs of abuse. The hairs on her neck stood up as her motherly protectiveness came to the front. Jacobs knew something was wrong. Jacobs was worried for these little girls. Relaying the meeting to Garrido’s parole officer and the presence of the two daughters Allison couldn’t have been prepared for the response. No one could be prepared for the shocking reply. “Garrido doesn’t have any daughters!”
Allison’s heart sank down to her stomach!
Just let us all take a deep breath and ponder this . How would you feel if you began with a suspicion that you couldn’t quite answer?? But this time you acted on your suspicions,carried out a background check, cracked an FBI case, solved a terrible crime, put that person in jail and freed that person’s captives.
We should all be so proud and grateful to Liza and Allison for acting on those protective motherly feelings.
