Doing a background check on Phillip Garrido ended 18 years of torment for Jaycee’s mother

Liza Campbell, special events manager at the University of California, Berkley, was spoken to by Garrido with his two girls in tow.He asked Liza about holding an event at the University. She had another commitment, so she asked him to return the following day.

Garrido was buoyant, impassioned, and full of excitement about the function he wanted to stage. It was one o’clock but Garrido’s two children were not at school. His daughters claimed that both parents educated them at home. The children were looking controlled, unobtrusive, and emotionally unresponsive. Liza just knew there was something about the girls that wasn't OK.

By chance Liza responded to her feelings that something wasn’t right and did a background check on Phillip Garrido. The report came back and Liza discovered that Garrido was a registered sex offender on parole for violent sex offences and kidnapping. Liza requested that Police Officer, Allison Jacobs, join her at the meeting the next day.

Allison was on the lookout for anything suspicious, particularly child abuse. Slowly Jacobs motherly intuition took over. Jacobs knew something was wrong. She was worried for these little girls. What happened next appalled Allison. She phoned Garrido’s parole officer after the meeting and told him of Garrido’s two daughters . We all reeled from the astonishing answer. “Garrido doesn't have any daughters!”

Allison’s heart sank down to her stomach!

Pause for a moment and think. How would you feel if you began with a suspicion that you couldn’t quite fathom out?? But rather than take no action you carried out a background check that not only cleared up a long standing FBI case but put someone in jail that needed to be there and gave others their long deserved freedom.
