When Phillip Garrido had a background check carried out on him three women gained their freedom

Liza Campbell, special events manager at the University of California, Berkley, was accosted by Garrido with his two girls in tow.He asked Liza about having an event at the University. She had another commitment, so she asked him to return the following day.

Garrido was buoyant, eager, and full of excitement about the function he wanted to organize. His two children ought have been at school. The girls told Liza they were home schooled. His daughters were looking controlled, in the background, and emotionally unresponsive. Liza’s instincts were on red alert. She had a gut feeling something was wrong.

Liza didn’t just not bother. Thinking, "Oh that is someone else’s job!" She carried out a background check in response to those suspect feelings. The results came back and Liza ascertained that Garrido was a registered sex offender on parole for violent sex offences and kidnapping. At Liza’s request Police Officer ,Allison Jacobs, sat in on the subsequent meeting between Liza and Phillip Garrido and his two daughters.

Jacobs was on the lookout for anything unusual, particularly child abuse. It wasn’t her Police instincts as much as her motherly instincts that kicked in. Jacobs knew something was wrong. She was worried for these little girls. The response astonished Jacobs. She telephoned Garrido’s parole officer after the meeting and told him of Garrido’s two daughters . The whole world reeled at the stunning reply. “Garrido doesn’t have any daughters!”

Allison’s heart sank down to her stomach!

Pause for a moment and think. What if you are not sure why but you just had a bad feeling about someone? But rather than take no action you carried out a background check that not only cracked a long standing FBI case but put someone in jail that needed to be there and gave others their long deserved freedom.
