Carrying out a background check on Phillip Garrido ended 18 years of worry for Jaycee’s family
Liza Campbell, special events manager at the University of California, Berkley, was approached by Garrido with his two girls in tow. A talk occurred regarding Garrido hiring a hall at the University for one of his events. She had another commitment, so she asked him to return the following day.
When explaining his event Garrido was enthusiastic and passionate . Garrido’s two daughters were of school age but not at school. Both girls said they were home schooled. But they were very emotionally disconnected. Something just wasn't right. Liza knew it. Her motherly instincts had kicked in.
Liza just didn't feel right about Garrido. Her feelings told her that something just wasn't right about those girls and so she conducted a background check on Garrido. The report came back and Liza discovered that Garrido was a registered sex offender on parole for violent sex offences and kidnapping. Liza then contacted Allison Jacobs, Police Officer, explained the strangeness of the meeting with Garrido, and asked her to sit in on the meeting that she had arranged for the next day.
At this second meeting Jacobs started to engage the girls in a chat, looking for any signs of abuse. It wasn't her Police intuition as much as her motherly instincts that rang alarm bells. Jacobs knew something was wrong. Jacobs was worried for these little girls. Relaying the meeting to Garrido's parole officer and the presence of the two daughters Jacobs couldn't have been prepared for the response. No one could be prepared for the appalling reply. “Garrido doesn't have any daughters!”
Allison’s heart sank down to her stomach!
Just let us all take a deep breath and ponder this . What if you don’t know why but you just had a bad feeling about someone? But your suspicions lead you to do a background check that not only solved an 18 year old FBI case but gave a mother and her two daughters a taste of freedom for the very first time.
We should all be so proud and grateful to Liza and Allison for acting on those protective motherly feelings.
