Doing a background check on Phillip Garrido ended 18 years of worry for Jaycee’s family
Liza Campbell, special events manager at the University of California, Berkley, was accosted by Garrido with his two girls in tow.He questioned Liza about holding an event at the campus. She had another commitment, so she asked him to return the following day.
When discussing his function Garrido was excited and passionate . It was one o’clock but the girls were not at school. They claimed that both parents educated them at home. They were subdued, in the background, and unemotional. Liza’s instincts were on high alert. She had an uneasy feeling something was wrong.
Liza didn't just sit back. Thinking, "Oh that is not my job!" She did a background check in response to those suspect feelings. This check declared that Garrido was on parole following a rape conviction and was a registered sex offender. Liza then contacted Allison Jacobs, Police Officer, explained the strangeness of the meeting with Garrido, and asked her to sit in on the meeting that she had set up for the next day.
At the following meeting Jacobs started to encourage the girls in a chat, checking for any signs of abuse. It wasn't Jacobs Police intuition as much as her motherly instincts that kicked in. Jacobs knew something was wrong. She was worried for these little girls. She phoned Garrido’s parole officer and told him of the meeting and of the two girls that Garrido had with him. Back came the astounding news. “Garrido doesn't have any daughters!”
Allison’s heart sank down to her stomach!
Lets all pause for a moment and consider. What if you are not sure why but you just had a bad feeling about someone? But your suspicions lead you to carrying out a background check that not only unravelled an 18 year old FBI case but gave a mother and her two daughters a taste of freedom for the very first time.
We should all be so proud and grateful to Liza and Allison for acting on those protective motherly feelings.
