A Background Check on Phillip Garrido finally lead to Jaycee Lee Dugard being set free from 18 years of incarceration and her two daughters gaining their freedom
Liza Campbell, special events manager at the University of California, Berkley, was accosted by Garrido with his two girls in tow. Garrido needed to find out about using the University campus rooms for putting on his event. She had another commitment, so she asked him to return the following day.
When talking over his event Garrido was exuberant and passionate . His teenage daughters were of school age but not at school. The girls claimed that both parents taught them at home. The children were quiet, in the background, and emotionally unresponsive. Something just wasn’t right. Liza knew it. Her motherly instincts had kicked in.
Luckily Liza responded to her feelings that something wasn’t right and carried out a background check on Phillip Garrido. The statement came back and Liza found out that Garrido was a registered sex offender on parole for violent sex offences and kidnapping. Liza then contacted Allison Jacobs, Police Officer, explained the strangeness of the meeting with Garrido, and requested Allison to sit in on the meeting that she had organised for the next day.
Talking to the two daughters Allison was on the lookout for any give away signs of child abuse. It wasn’t Jacobs Police instincts as much as her motherly instincts that kicked in. Jacobs knew something was wrong. Jacobs was worried for these little girls. She called Garrido’s parole officer and told him of the meeting and of the two daughters that Garrido had with him. No one could be prepared for the appalling reply. “Garrido doesn’t have any daughters!”
Allison’s heart sank down to her stomach!
Just stop for a moment and think. How would you feel if you started with a suspicion that you couldn’t quite put your finger on?? But your worries lead you to conduct a background check that not only solved an 18 year old FBI case but gave a mother and her two daughters a taste of freedom for the very first time.
We should all be so proud and grateful to Liza and Allison for acting on those protective motherly feelings.
