A Background Check on Phillip Garrido ultimately lead to Jaycee Lee Dugard being released from 18 years of incarceration and her two daughters gaining their freedom
Liza Campbell, special events manager at the University of California, Berkley, was accosted by Garrido with his two girls in tow.He spoke to Liza about staging an event at the University. She had another commitment, so she asked him to return the following day.
Garrido was buoyant, eager, and full of excitement about the function he wanted to organize. It was one o’clock but his two daughters were not at school. The girls told Liza they were home schooled. Alarmingly catatonic. Liza just felt there was something about his children that wasn't right.
Liza didn’t just do nothing. Thinking, "Oh that is not my job!" She did a background check in response to those suspect feelings. The statement came back and Liza discovered that Garrido was a registered sex offender on parole for rape and kidnapping. At Liza’s request Police Officer ,Allison Jacobs, attended the next meeting between Liza and Phillip Garrido and his two daughters.
At the next meeting Jacobs began to encourage the girls in conversation, looking for any signs of abuse. It wasn’t Allisons Police instincts as much as her motherly instincts that made her take notice. Jacobs knew something was wrong. Allison was worried for these little girls. The reply astounded Allison. She phoned Garrido’s parole officer after the meeting and told him of Garrido’s two daughters . Back came the appalling news. “Garrido doesn’t have any daughters!”
Allison’s heart sank down to her stomach!
Just let us all take a deep breath and ponder this . How would you feel if your intuition told you that something was strange about a person? But your concerns lead you to conduct a background check that not only solved an 18 year old FBI case but gave a mother and her two daughters a taste of freedom for the very first time.
We should all be so proud and grateful to Liza and Allison for acting on those protective motherly feelings.
