A Background Check on Phillip Garrido finally lead to Jaycee Lee Dugard being set free from eighteen years of captivity and her two daughters gaining their freedom
Liza Campbell, special events manager at the University of California, Berkley, was accosted by Garrido with his two girls in tow.He questioned Liza about staging an event at the University. She had another commitment, so she asked him to return the following day.
When explaining his function Garrido was exuberant and passionate . The girls ought have been at school. Each girl said they were home schooled. Both girls should signs of emotional immaturity, disconnected from the world, and a stunted development. Liza’s instincts were on red alert. She had a gut feeling something was wrong.
By chance Liza responded to her instincts that something wasn’t right and did a background check on Garrido. The results came back and Liza ascertained that Garrido was a registered sex offender on parole for violent sex offences and kidnapping. Liza then contacted Allison Jacobs, Police Officer, explained the strangeness of the meeting with Garrido, and asked Allison to sit in on the meeting that she had arranged for tomorrow.
Jacobs was on the lookout for anything unusual, particularly child abuse. The hairs on her neck stood up as her motherly protectiveness came to the fore. Jacobs knew something was wrong. She was worried for these little girls. She phoned Garrido’s parole officer and informed him of the meeting and of the two girls that Garrido had with him. We all reeled from theappalling answer. “Garrido doesn’t have any daughters!”
Allison’s heart sank down to her stomach!
Just stop for a moment and think. How would you feel if you began with a suspicion that you couldn’t quite fathom out?? But rather than take no action you ran a background check that not only cracked a long standing FBI case but put someone in jail that needed to be there and gave others their long deserved freedom.
We should all be so proud and grateful to Liza and Allison for acting on those protective motherly feelings.
