After Phillip Garrido had a background check carried out on him three women were set free
Liza Campbell, special events manager at the University of California, Berkley, was approached by Garrido with his two girls in tow. A discussion took place regarding Garrido hiring a hall at the University for one of his functions. She had another commitment, so she asked him to return the following day.
Liza was struck by the passion that Garrido spoke with when he talked about the function he wanted to hold on the University campus. It was one o’clock but his two daughters were not at school. Garrido's two daughters told Liza they were home schooled. His daughters were subdued, inconspicuous, and emotionally unresponsive. Liza’s instincts were on high alert. She had an uneasy feeling something was wrong.
Liza didn't just do nothing. Thinking, "Oh that is someone else’s job!" She did a background check in response to those suspect feelings. The report came back and Liza found out that Garrido was a registered sex offender on parole for rape and kidnapping. Liza requested that Police Officer, Allison Jacobs, sit in on the meeting the next day.
Chatting to the two daughters Allison was watching for any give away signs of child abuse. The hairs on her neck stood up as her motherly intuition came to the surface. Jacobs knew something was wrong. She was worried for these little girls. She phoned Garrido's parole officer and informed him of the meeting and of the two daughters that Garrido had with him. No one could be prepared for the stunning reply. “Garrido doesn't have any daughters!”
Allison’s heart sank down to her stomach!
Lets all stop for a moment and consider. What if you don’t know why but you just had a bad feeling about someone? But instead of doing nothing you conducted a background check that not only solved a long standing FBI case but put someone in prison that needed to be there and gave others their long deserved freedom.
We should all be so proud and grateful to Liza and Allison for acting on those protective motherly feelings.
