When Phillip Garrido had a background check carried out on him three women gained their freedom
Liza Campbell, special events manager at the University of California, Berkley, was accosted by Garrido with his two girls in tow. Garrido needed to find out about using the University campus rooms for putting on his function. She had another commitment, so she asked him to return the following day.
When explaining his function Garrido was enthusiastic and passionate . Garrido’s two daughters were of school age but not at school. They both told Liza they were home schooled. Both girls should signs of emotional immaturity, disconnected from the world, and a stunted development. Liza just felt there was something about the two girls that wasn't OK.
Liza didn't just sit back. Thinking, "Oh that is not my job!" She carried out a background check in response to those instincts . The background check revealed that Garrido was a violent sex offender on parole. At Liza’s request Police Officer ,Allison Jacobs, attended the subsequent meeting between Liza and Phillip Garrido.
Jacobs was on the lookout for anything suspicious, particularly child abuse. The hairs on her neck stood up as her motherly protectiveness came to the front. Jacobs knew something was wrong. She was worried for these little girls. She phoned Garrido’s parole officer and informed him of the meeting and of the two girls that Garrido had with him. No one could be prepared for the shocking reply. “Garrido doesn't have any daughters!”
Allison’s heart sank down to her stomach!
Just let us all take a deep breath and ponder this . How would you feel if your intuition told you that something wasn't right about a person? But this time you acted on your instincts,ran a background check, solved an FBI case, solved a despicable crime, put that person in jail and freed that person’s captives.
We should all be so proud and grateful to Liza and Allison for acting on those protective motherly feelings.
