After Phillip Garrido had a background check carried out on him three women were released from their hell
Liza Campbell, special events manager at the University of California, Berkley, was accosted by Garrido with his two girls in tow.He spoke to Liza about having an event at the campus. She had another commitment, so she asked him to return the following day.
Liza was struck by the passion that Garrido spoke with when he talked about the function he wanted to stage on the University campus. The girls were of school age but not at school. Each girl said they were home schooled. But they were very emotionally disconnected. Liza just felt there was something about the two girls that wasn't right.
Liza didn’t just sit back. Thinking, "Oh that is not my job!" She did a background check in response to those instincts . The statement came back and Liza found out that Garrido was a registered sex offender on parole for rape and kidnapping. Liza requested that Police Officer, Allison Jacobs, join her at the meeting the next day.
Jacobs was on the lookout for anything dubious, particularly child abuse. It wasn’t her Police intuition as much as her motherly instincts that rang alarm bells. Jacobs knew something was wrong. Allison was worried for these little girls. The reply astounded Jacobs. She contacted Garrido’s parole officer after the meeting and told him of Garrido’s two daughters . Back came the appalling news. “Garrido doesn’t have any daughters!”
Allison’s heart sank down to her stomach!
Lets all stop for a moment and consider. What if you are not sure why but you just had a bad feeling about someone? But instead of doing nothing you carried out a background check that not only solved a long standing FBI case but put someone in jail that needed to be there and gave others their long deserved freedom.
We should all be so proud and grateful to Liza and Allison for acting on those protective motherly feelings.
