Doing a background check on Phillip Garrido ended eighteen years of torment for Jaycee’s mother
Liza Campbell, special events manager at the University of California, Berkley, was spoken to by Garrido with his two girls in tow.He spoke to Liza about staging an event at the University. She had another commitment, so she asked him to return the following day.
When discussing his function Garrido was excited and passionate . The girls should have been at school. They claimed that both parents schooled them at home. Alarmingly catatonic. Something just wasn’t right. Liza knew it. Her motherly instincts had kicked in.
Liza didn’t just sit back. Thinking, "Oh that is not my job!" She ran a background check in response to those suspect feelings. This check showed that Garrido was on parole following a rape conviction and was a registered sex offender. Liza then contacted Allison Jacobs, Police Officer, explained the strangeness of the meeting with Garrido, and requested Allison to sit in on the meeting that she had set up for the next day.
Talking to the two sisters Allison was waiting for any give away signs of child abuse. Gradually her motherly intuition took over. Jacobs knew something was wrong. Allison was worried for these little girls. She called Garrido’s parole officer and informed him of the meeting and of the two children that Garrido had with him. The whole world reeled at the astonishing reply. “Garrido doesn’t have any daughters!”
Allison’s heart sank down to her stomach!
Lets all stop for a moment and consider. How would you feel if you began with a suspicion that you couldn’t quite answer?? But this time you acted on your suspicions, ran a background check, solved an FBI case, solved a horrific crime, put that person in jail and freed that person’s captives.
We should all be so proud and grateful to Liza and Allison for acting on those protective motherly feelings.
