A Background Check on Phillip Garrido ultimately lead to Jaycee Lee Dugard being released from eighteen years of captivity and her two daughters gaining their freedom
Liza Campbell, special events manager at the University of California, Berkley, was accosted by Garrido with his two girls in tow. Garrido wanted to find out about using the University campus facilities for putting on his function. She had another commitment, so she asked him to return the following day.
When talking over his function Garrido was excited and passionate . Garrido’s two daughters were of school age but not at school. They claimed that both parents educated them at home. The two daughters were pale, not at school and acted as if brainwashed. Liza’s instincts were on red alert. She had an uneasy feeling something was wrong.
Liza didn’t just do nothing. Thinking, "Oh that is not my job!" She did a background check in response to those suspect feelings. The results came back and Liza discovered that Garrido was a registered sex offender on parole for rape and kidnapping. At Liza’s request Police Officer ,Allison Jacobs, sat in on the next meeting between Liza and Garrido.
At the next meeting Jacobs began to involve the girls in conversation, looking for any signs of abuse. It wasn’t Allisons Police instincts as much as her motherly instincts that rang alarm bells. Jacobs knew something was wrong. Allison was worried for these little girls. Relaying the meeting to Garrido’s parole officer and the presence of the two girls Jacobs couldn’t have been prepared for the reply. Back came the appalling news. “Garrido doesn’t have any daughters!”
Allison’s heart sank down to her stomach!
Just stop for a moment and think. How would you feel if your intuition told you that something was wrong about a person? But this time you acted on your suspicions,carried out a background check, solved an FBI case, solved a horrific crime, put that person in jail and freed that person’s captives.
We should all be so proud and grateful to Liza and Allison for acting on those protective motherly feelings.
