A Background Check on Phillip Garrido ultimately lead to Jaycee Lee Dugard being released from 18 years of captivity and her two daughters gaining their freedom
Liza Campbell, special events manager at the University of California, Berkley, was accosted by Garrido with his two girls in tow.He questioned Liza about having an event at the campus. She had another commitment, so she asked him to return the following day.
Garrido was animated, passionate, and full of excitement about the function he wanted to organize. The girls needed to have been at school. Garrido’s two daughters told Liza they were home schooled. The two daughters were pale, not at school and acted as if brainwashed. Liza just knew there was something about the two girls that wasn't legitimate.
Liza just didn’t feel right about Garrido. A mother’s desire to protect told her that something just wasn’t right about his daughters and so she ran a background check on Phillip Garrido. The background check disclosed that Garrido was a violent rapist on parole. Liza then contacted Allison Jacobs, Police Officer, explained the strangeness of the meeting with Garrido, and asked her to sit in on the meeting that she had organised for the next day.
At the following meeting Jacobs started to encourage the girls in a chat, observing any signs of abuse. Slowly Jacobs motherly instincts took over. Jacobs knew something was wrong. Jacobs was worried for these little girls. Disclosing the meeting to Garrido’s parole officer and the presence of the two children Jacobs couldn’t have been prepared for what happened next. We all reeled from theappalling answer. “Garrido doesn’t have any daughters!”
Allison’s heart sank down to her stomach!
Just let us all take a deep breath and ponder this . How would you feel if your instincts told you that something was strange about a person? But your concerns lead you to do a background check that not only solved an 18 year old FBI case but gave a mother and her two daughters a taste of freedom for the very first time.
