A Background Check on Phillip Garrido eventually lead to Jaycee Lee Dugard being released from 18 years of captivity and her two daughters gaining their freedom
Liza Campbell, special events manager at the University of California, Berkley, was accosted by Garrido with his two girls in tow.He spoke to Liza about having an event at the campus. She had another commitment, so she asked him to return the following day.
Liza was impressed by the passion that Garrido spoke with when he talked about the function he wanted to stage on the University campus. Garrido’s two daughters were of school age but not at school. Garrido’s two daughters told Liza they were home schooled. The girls were ashen, not at school and acted as if brainwashed. Something just wasn’t right. Liza knew it. Her motherly instincts had kicked in.
By chance Liza responded to her instincts that something wasn’t right and carried out a background check on Garrido. This check revealed that Garrido was on parole after a rape conviction and was a registered sex offender. At Liza’s request Police Officer ,Allison Jacobs, attended the following meeting between Liza and Garrido.
Jacobs was on the lookout for anything dubious, particularly child abuse. Gradually Jacobs motherly instincts took over. Jacobs knew something was wrong. Allison was worried for these little girls. She called Garrido’s parole officer and told him of the meeting and of the two children that Garrido had with him. Back came the shocking news. “Garrido doesn’t have any daughters!”
Allison’s heart sank down to her stomach!
Just stop for a moment and think. How would you feel if you started with a suspicion that you couldn’t quite fathom out?? But this time you acted on your feelings,conducted a background check, cracked an FBI case, solved a horrific crime, put that person in jail and freed that person’s captives.
We should all be so proud and grateful to Liza and Allison for acting on those protective motherly feelings.
