When Phillip Garrido had a background check carried out on him three women gained their freedom
Liza Campbell, special events manager at the University of California, Berkley, was approached by Garrido with his two girls in tow. Garrido had to find out about using the University campus rooms for putting on his function. She had another commitment, so she asked him to return the following day.
When talking over his function Garrido was exuberant and passionate . His teenage daughters were of school age but not at school. They claimed that both parents taught them at home. His daughters were quiet, inconspicuous, and unemotional. Liza just felt there was something about the girls that wasn't right.
Liza didn’t just do nothing. Thinking, "Oh that is someone else’s job!" She did a background check in response to those suspect feelings. The background check declared that Garrido was a violent sex offender on parole. Liza asked that Police Officer, Allison Jacobs, join her at the meeting the next day.
At the following meeting Jacobs began to engage the girls in a chat, observing any signs of abuse. The hairs on her neck stood up as her motherly intuition came to the front. Jacobs knew something was wrong. Allison was worried for these little girls. Reporting the meeting to Garrido’s parole officer and the presence of the two daughters Jacobs couldn’t have been prepared for what happened next. No one could be prepared for the appalling reply. “Garrido doesn’t have any daughters!”
Allison’s heart sank down to her stomach!
Just let us all take a deep breath and ponder this . How would you feel if your instincts told you that something wasn’t right about a person? But your concerns lead you to carrying out a background check that not only unravelled an 18 year old FBI case but gave a mother and her two daughters a taste of freedom for the very first time.
We should all be so proud and grateful to Liza and Allison for acting on those protective motherly feelings.
