It was a Background Check that gave Jaycee her freedom.
Liza Campbell felt huge amounts of anxiety about Philip Garrido so she ran a background check on him to find out exactly who he was. This showed her that he was on parole for a rape conviction and was a registered sex offender. It was this ‘suspicion’ coupled with a ‘background check’ that lead to Jaycee being freed after eighteen years of captivity.
Background checks are no longer the sole prerogative of the law enforcement agencies. The Freedom of Information Act and other changes in the Law, together with the advent of computers, the Internet, and online Background Check services, has resulted in all of us being able to carry out background checks on anyone. Thank goodness we can when it results in people like Jaycee getting her freedom after all these years, and monsters like Garrido being arrested.
I’m sickened by the thought. What if! Lets say Liza Campbell didn’t have access to a background check service? Just ponder for a moment the possible outcomes. How much longer would Jaycee have to bear captivity? When would this shocking saga have ended?
So what happened? Liza Campbell, special events manager at the University of California, Berkley, was approached by Garrido regarding him holding an event at the campus. She had another commitment, so she asked him to return the following day.
It was as a result of this initial encounter with Garrido that lead to Liza conducting a background check on him and discovering his disturbing history. Campbell then asked Allison Jacobs, Police Officer, to sit in on the meeting the next day.
After this second meeting Jacobs informed Garrido’s parole officer and the events as you now know them were exposed . Jaycee and her two daughters gained their freedom. Thank you Liza!
