It was a Background Check that gave Jaycee her freedom.
Liza Campbell felt huge amounts of anxiety about Philip Garrido so she ran a background check on him to find out what his history was. This showed her that Phillip Garrido was on parole because of a rape conviction and was a registered sex offender. Jaycee’s freedom was a direct consequence of that background check. A background check carried out by a suspicious Liza Campbell.
Background checks are no longer the sole prerogative of the law enforcement agencies. The Freedom of Information Act and other changes in the Law, together with the advent of computers, the internet, and online Background Check services, has resulted in all of us being able to carry out background checks on anyone. Thank goodness we can when it results in people like Jaycee regaining her freedom after all these years, and monsters like Garrido being caught.
I find this all rather difficult to take in. What if! What if Liza Campbell didn’t or couldn’t perform a Background Check on Garrido? Just ponder for a moment the possible outcomes. How much longer would Jaycee have to bear captivity? How much longer would Garrido’s evil go unchecked?
In more detail. Phillip Garrido with his two girls in tow went to Liza Campbell, Special Events Organiser at the University of California, Berkley, to talk about hiring a hall at the campus. She had another commitment, so she asked him to return the following day.
Garrido’s past convictions came to light after Liza ran a background check on him following this first difficult meeting . Campbell then asked Allison Jacobs, Police Officer, to sit in on the meeting the next day.
After this second meeting Jacobs notified Garrido’s parole officer and the events as you know them came to light .
Thank goodness we can now all carry out Background Checks when we have suspicions!
