People Magazine took the first public and exclusive images of Jaycee Lee Dugard, 29 years. Jaycee said, “I’m so happy to be back with my family”, she told the magazine. "Nothing is more important than the unconditional love and support I have from them.” These pictures are an inspiration to us all and convey hope to the families of missing children. She looks incredibly happy now she is back with her mother and family. A face that conceals her age and what she has had to go through.
Jaycee Lee Dugard was kidnapped in 1991 when she was just 11 years old. A typical, everyday short walk from her home in South Lake Tahoe, California to the school bus stop, within sight of the house, ended with Jaycee being abducted. Carl Probyn, Jaycee’s stepfather, was in the garage entrance of their home, watched Jaycee walk towards the school bus stop a short distance away. The family’s world fell apart when a woman then grabbed Jaycee and pulled her into a gray sedan before racing off. Carl’s frenzied efforts to pursue the gray sedan on his bike were fruitless.
Angel, 15, and Starlit, 11, are Jaycee's daughters, apparently fathered by Phillip Garrido, 58; a registered sex offender who police say raped her repeatedly over the years. The yard at the rear of Garrido’s home close to Antioch, CA, is were Jaycee and her girls lived, never going to school in all those years or ever seeing a Doctor.
It may come as a bombshell to many to learn that Phillip and Nancy Garrido actually lived with his ailing elderly mother in a house belonging to her. Why hasn’t more been said about his mother and her involvement in Jaycee’s imprisonment? It’s as if ailing and elderly automatically absolves her of any possible wrong doing. Was she ailing and elderly 18 years ago when Jaycee was first imprisoned in her backyard? Has she been ailing and elderly every day of those 18 years? Was she ailing and elderly 15 years ago when Phillip Garrido spent 5 months in prison and Nancy fed Jaycee alone? Was she ailing and elderly while Jaycee gave birth without any medical aid to two babies.
This backyard area, covered by mimosa trees and hidden by a high fence, featured a hellish warren of four tents and five sheds.This is where Jaycee and her two daughters, Angel and Starlit spent their days and nights. Remaining for years in these dirty tents and unkempt woodenshacks.
Altogether Phillip Garrido and his wife Nancy Garrido face a combined total of 29 felony charges, including forcible abduction, rape and false imprisonment.
Jaycee and her two daughters are now living in seclusion with her mom, Terry Probyn, 50, and family. A family spokeswoman said Jaycee was riding horses, cooking meals and thinking of collaborating on a book.
These photographs are almost too good. If we are not watchful we could allow ourselves to mask over or dismiss or even diminish Jaycee’s horrific ordeal from the age of 11 years old to a 29 year old mother of two.
They do however give us all hope. The sort of hope that comes from seeing another human being putting on a heartwarming smile even after suffering 18 years of hell.
It is truly inspiring.
