Background Check: Results in The Arrest Of Johnny Wright

A background check in the end nailed Phillip and Nancy Garrido. Plus some astute suspicion and a mother’s protective instincts.

Garrido with his two daughters in tow spoke to Liza Campbell, Events Organiser, University of California, Berkeley about hiring the facilities at the University to hold a meeting there that he wanted to stage. She became suspicious and carried out a Background Check on him. She found that Phillip Garrido was on parole after a violent rape conviction and was on the registered sex offenders list.

After asking Phillip Garrido and his two daughters to return the next day for a further meeting Liza contacted Police Officer, Alison Jacobs, and asked Ally to sit in with her and Garrido at this next meeting.

At this meeting Alison Jacobs spoke separately to Garrido's two daughters. Her motherly instincts told her something was wrong. Alison telephoned Phillip Garrido's parole officer about the meeting with Garrido and his two daughters .

Back came the shocking news. She felt sick to her stomach. Garrido didn't have any daughters!

The torment that Jaycee Lee Dugard's and her family have lived through since 1991 has finally ended. In all a total of 29 felony charges where filed against the Garrido's .

Garrido is held in custody at the El Dorado County Jail in Placerville, California, as he and his wife Nancy Garrido await trial .

This is what a woman’s suspicion, a Background Check and a mother’s instincts can do. Hooray for background checks and suspicion. How great was that result!

Now we read of another great success story of a Background Check bringing someone to justice but this one doesn't have the ingredients of a woman’s suspicions or a mother’s instincts. This crazy story is so incredulous you just can’t make it up .

In 1976 Johnny Wright was detained for the murder of Rebecca A Doisy but released because of insufficient evidence. In 1985 a warrant was issued for his arrest in connection with that murder when a statement was made by a witness linking him with the murder. Wright disappeared off the radar screen for 24 years. A few days ago Johnny Wright went into the Police Station in Lawrenceville, Georgia and requested that a background check be carried out on himself. He was quickly arrested. The background check was part of the job requirement in the application for a driver’s job in Atlanta. Imagine the shock of all concerned when the arrest warrant appeared from way back in 1985! Johnny Wright now waits in custody

If only someone in the last 24 years had been suspicious enough of Wright to have carried out a Background Check on him, just like Liza Campbell did with Garrido. Perhaps Background Checks should form part of every job application?
