A background check at last nailed Phillip and Nancy Garrido. With some home grown suspicion and a mother’s protective instincts.
Phillip Garrido with his two teenage daughters in tow talked to Liza Campbell, Events Organiser, University of California, Berkeley, about staging an event at the University. She became suspicious and carried out a Background Check on him. His record showed him to be on parole for a rape conviction and to be a registered sex offender.
Liza was unable to conclude their meeting that day because of a prior appointment and so asked Garrido to return the following day. Meanwhile with the results back from the background check Liza Campbell asked Ally Jacobs, Police Officer, to accompany her at the following meeting the next day .
Alison Jacobs’ motherly feelings showed her something just wasn’t right about the girls and informed Garrido’sparole officer .
Back came the shocking news. She felt sick to her stomach. Garrido didn’t have any daughters!
Now Phillip and Nancy Garrido face a combined total of 29 felony charges, involving forcible abduction, rape and false imprisonment in connection with the kidnapping of Jaycee Lee Dugard in 1991.
Garrido is held in custody at the El Dorado County Jail in Placerville, California, as he and his wife Nancy Garrido await trial .
This is what a woman’s suspicion, a Background Check and a mother’s instincts can do. Hooray for background checks and suspicion. How great was that result!
Our second story that promotes doing a background check is the arrest this week of Johnny Wright after 25 years of avoiding the Law.
In 1976 Johnny Wright was detained for the murder of Rebecca A Doisy but released because of insufficient evidence. In 1985 a warrant was issued for his arrest in connection with that murder when a statement was made by a witness linking him with the murder. Wright disappeared off the radar screen for 24 years. A few days ago Johnny Wright went into the Police Station in Lawrenceville, Georgia and requested that a background check be carried out on himself. He was quickly arrested. The background check was part of the job requirement in the application for a driver’s job in Atlanta. Imagine the shock of all concerned when the arrest warrant showed up from way back in 1985! Johnny Wright now waits in custody
If only someone in the last 24 years had been suspicious enough of Wright to have carried out a Background Check on him, just like Liza Campbell did with Garrido. Perhaps Background Checks should form part of every job application?
