Phillip and Nancy Garrido from Antioch, California were apprehended recently as a direct result of a background check. In conjunction with a mixture of a Mum’s instincts and suspicions as well .
Phillip Garrido with his two daughters in tow discussed with Liza Campbell, Events Organiser, University of California, Berkeley about hiring a Hall at the University to hold a meeting there that he wanted to organise. Liza became suspicious and carried out a Background Check on him. She found that Phillip Garrido was on parole after a serious sex conviction and was on the registered sex offenders list.
After asking Phillip Garrido and his two daughters to return the next day for a further meeting Liza contacted Police Officer, Alison Jacobs, and asked Ally to sit in with her and Garrido at this next meeting.
During this meeting between Liza, Ally, Garrido and his two daughters, Ally’s motherly instincts kicked in and told her that something just wasn’t right with the two teenage daughters. After the meeting Ally appraised Garrido’s parole officer of the meeting and of Garrido’s two teenage daughters.
Back came the shocking news. She felt sick to her stomach. Garrido didn’t have any daughters!
The torment that Jaycee Lee Dugard’s and her family have lived through since 1991 has finally come to an end. In all a total of 29 felony charges where filed against the Garrido’s .

This is what a woman’s suspicion, a Background Check and a mother’s instincts can do. Hooray for background checks and suspicion. How great was that result!
Our next story doesn’t involve a woman’s suspicions or a mother’s instincts. It depends purely on a Background Check bringing someone to justice .
Johnny Wright was arrested on 23rd September after trying to apply for a driving job in an Atlanta suburb. The job required a routine background check for the job application. It was Wright who went to the Police Station in Lawrenceville, Georgia, to have the Background Check carried out! When Johnny Wright came back the next day to get the paperwork he was arrested on a warrant issued in Missouri in 1985 for second-degree murder committed way back in 1976!
If only someone in the last 24 years had been suspicious enough of Wright to have carried out a Background Check on him, just like Liza Campbell did with Garrido. Perhaps Background Checks should form part of every job application?
