Recently it was reported how a combination of a woman’s suspicions, a background check and a mother’s instincts resulted in the arrest of Phillip Garrido from Antioch, California .
Garrido with his two daughters in tow discussed with Liza Campbell, Events Organiser, University of California, Berkeley about hiring a Hall at the University to hold a meeting there that he wanted to organise. She became suspicious and carried out a Background Check on him. She found that Phillip Garrido was on parole after a vicious rape conviction and was on the registered sex offenders list.
Liza was unable to conclude their arrangements that day because of a prior appointment and so asked Garrido to return the following day. Meanwhile with the results back from the background check Liza asked Ally Jacobs, Police Officer, to accompany her at the following meeting the next day .
During this meeting between Liza, Ally, Garrido and his two daughters, Ally’s motherly instincts kicked in and told her that something just wasn’t right with the two teenage daughters. After the meeting Ally told Garrido’s parole officer of the meeting and of Garrido’s two daughters.
Back came the shocking news. She felt sick to her stomach. Garrido didn’t have any daughters!
The nightmare that Jaycee Lee Dugard’s and her family have suffered since 1991 has finally ceased. In all a total of 29 felony charges where filed against the Garrido’s .
El Dorado County Jail in Placerville, CA, detains Phillip Garrido while he awaits trial.
This is what a woman’s suspicion, a Background Check and a mother’s instincts can do. Hooray for background checks and suspicion. How great was that result!
The next story doesn’t involve a woman’s suspicions or a mother’s instincts. It rests purely on a Background Check bringing someone to justice .
You couldn’t make this up. Johnny Wright strode into the Police Station in Lawrenceville, Georgia, and applied for a background check be carried out on him. This was part of a job application for a driver’s job in Atlanta. He returned the next day to pay the 15 dollars and collect the paperwork but found himself behind bars. An arrest warrant from 1985 had come to light in connection with the second-degree murder of Rebecca A Doisy committed way back in 1976!
If only someone in the last 24 years had been suspicious enough of Wright to have carried out a Background Check on him, just like Liza Campbell did with Garrido. Perhaps Background Checks should form part of every job application?
