Background Check: Captures Another One! Garrido And Now Wright

Recently we heard how a combination of a woman’s suspicions, a background check and a mother’s instincts resulted in the arrest of Phillip Garrido from Antioch, California .

Garrido with his two daughters in tow talked to Liza Campbell, Events Organiser, University of California, Berkeley, about holding an event at the University. Liza Campbell became suspicious and carried out a Background Check on him. His record showed him to be on parole for a rape conviction and to be a registered sex offender.

Liza asked Police Officer, Alison Jacobs, to be with her the next day at a meeting with Garrido and his two daughters .

Alison Jacobs’ motherly feelings told her something was wrong with the girls and rang Garrido’sparole officer .

Back came the shocking news. She felt sick to her stomach. Garrido didn’t have any daughters!

The horror that Jaycee Lee Dugard’s and her family have lived through since 1991 has finally come to an end. In all a total of 29 felony charges where filed against the Garrido’s .

Garrido remains in custody at the El Dorado County Jail in Placerville, CA, as he and his wife Nancy Garrido await trial .

This is what a woman’s suspicion, a Background Check and a mother’s instincts can do. Hooray for background checks and suspicion. How great was that result!

Now we learn of another great success story of a Background Check bringing someone to justice but this one doesn’t have the ingredients of a woman’s suspicions or a mother’s instincts. In fact this story is so incredulous you just can’t make it up .

In 1976 Johnny Wright was suspected of the murder of Rebecca A Doisy but released because of insufficient evidence. In 1985 a warrant was issued for his arrest in connection with that murder when a statement was made by a witness linking him with the murder. Wright disappeared off the radar screen for 24 years. Last week Johnny Wright went into the Police Station in Lawrenceville, Georgia and asked that a background check be carried out on himself. He was promptly arrested. The background check was part of the job requirement in the application for a driver’s job in Atlanta. Imagine the shock of all involved when the arrest warrant showed up from way back in 1985! Johnny Wright now sits in custody

If only someone in the last 24 years had been suspicious enough of Wright to have carried out a Background Check on him, just like Liza Campbell did with Garrido. Perhaps Background Checks should form part of every job application?
