Only the other week it was reported how a combination of a woman’s suspicions, a background check and a mother’s instincts resulted in the arrest of Phillip Garrido from Antioch, California .
First Liza Campbell, Events Organiser,University of California, Berkeley, after talking to Garrido with his two daughters, became suspicious and carried out a Background Check on him which showed from his record he was on parole after a violent rape conviction and that he was a registered sex offender .
After asking Garrido to return the next day for a further meeting Liza contacted Police Officer, Ally Jacobs, and asked Ally to sit in with her and Garrido at this next meeting.
At this meeting Alison Jacobs talked separately to the two children. Her motherly instincts kicked in, something was strange about the girls. Ally instructed Phillip Garrido’s parole officer about the meeting with Garrido and his two daughters .
Back came the shocking news. She felt sick to her stomach. Garrido didn’t have any daughters!
In relation to the abduction of Jaycee Lee Dugard from near her home in South Lake Tahoe, California, in 1991, the Garrido’s now faced a combined total of 29 felony charges.
At the El Dorado County Superior Court in Placerville, California, Superior Court Judge Douglas Phimister set bail for Phillip Garrido at 30 million dollars while he awaits trial.
This is what a woman’s suspicion, a Background Check and a mother’s instincts can do. Hooray for background checks and suspicion. How great was that result!
The next story doesn’t involve a woman’s suspicions or a mother’s instincts. It depends purely on a Background Check bringing someone to justice .
In 1976 Johnny Wright was interviewed for the murder of Rebecca A Doisy but released because of insufficient evidence. In 1985 a warrant was issued for his arrest in connection with that murder when a statement was made by a witness linking him with the murder. Wright disappeared off the radar screen for 24 years. Last week Johnny Wright went into the Police Station in Lawrenceville, Georgia and requested that a background check be conducted on himself. He was promptly arrested. The background check was part of the job requirement in the application for a driver’s job in Atlanta. Imagine the shock of all concerned when the arrest warrant surfaced from way back in 1985! Johnny Wright now sits in custody
If only someone in the last 24 years had been suspicious enough of Wright to have carried out a Background Check on him, just like Liza Campbell did with Garrido. Perhaps Background Checks should form part of every job application?
