Only the other week it was reported how a combination of a woman’s suspicions, a background check and a mother’s instincts resulted in the detention of Phillip Garrido from Antioch, California .
First Liza Campbell, Events Organiser,University of California, Berkeley, after talking to Garrido with his two daughters, became suspicious and carried out a Background Check on him which showed he was on parole after a particularly nasty sexual conviction and that he was a registered sex offender .
After asking Garrido to return the next day for a further meeting Liza contacted Police Officer, Ally Jacobs, and asked Ally to sit in with her and Garrido at this next meeting.
At this meeting Alison Jacobs spoke separately to the two children. Her motherly instincts kicked in, something was wrong. Ally telephoned Phillip Garrido's parole officer about the meeting with Garrido and his two daughters .
Back came the shocking news. She felt sick to her stomach. Garrido didn't have any daughters!
The horror that Jaycee Lee Dugard's and her family have lived through since 1991 has finally come to an end. In all a total of 29 felony charges where filed against the Garrido's .
Garrido is held in custody at the El Dorado County Jail in Placerville, California, as he and his wife Nancy Garrido await trial .
This is what a woman’s suspicion, a Background Check and a mother’s instincts can do. Hooray for background checks and suspicion. How great was that result!
Now we learn of another great success story of a Background Check bringing someone to justice but this one doesn't have the ingredients of a woman’s suspicions or a mother’s instincts. In fact this story is so amazing you just can’t make it up .
In 1976 Johnny Wright was interviewed for the murder of Rebecca A Doisy but released because of insufficient evidence. In 1985 a warrant was issued for his arrest in connection with that murder when evidence against him was provided by a witness. Wright disappeared off the radar screen for 24 years. A few days ago Johnny Wright went into the Police Station in Lawrenceville, Georgia and requested that a background check be conducted on himself. He was quickly arrested. The background check was part of the job requirement in the application for a driver’s job in Atlanta. Imagine the shock of all concerned when the arrest warrant surfaced from way back in 1985! Johnny Wright now waits in custody
If only someone in the last 24 years had been suspicious enough of Wright to have carried out a Background Check on him, just like Liza Campbell did with Garrido. Perhaps Background Checks should form part of every job application?
