Just a while ago we found how a combination of a woman’s suspicions, a background check and a mother’s instincts resulted in the detention of Phillip Garrido from Antioch, California .
First Liza Campbell, Events Organiser,University of California, Berkeley, after seeing Garrido with his two daughters, became suspicious and carried out a Background Check on him which showed from his record he was on parole after a vicious sexual assault conviction and that he was a registered sex offender .
Liza Campbell then asked Police Officer, Ally Jacobs, to be with her the next day at a meeting with Garrido and his two daughters .
During this meeting between Liza, Ally, Garrido and his two daughters, Ally’s motherly instincts kicked in and told her that something just wasn’t right with the two girls. After the meeting Ally advised Garrido’s parole officer of the meeting and of Garrido’s two teenage daughters.
Back came the shocking news. She felt sick to her stomach. Garrido didn’t have any daughters!
In the case of the abduction of Jaycee Lee Dugard from the school bus stop within sight of her home in South Lake Tahoe, California, in 1991, the Garrido’s now faced a combined total of 29 felony charges.

This is what a woman’s suspicion, a Background Check and a mother’s instincts can do. Hooray for background checks and suspicion. How great was that result!
Our next story doesn’t involve a woman’s suspicions or a mother’s instincts. It depends simply on a Background Check bringing someone to justice .
Johnny Wright was apprehended recently after trying to apply for a driving job in an Atlanta suburb. The job required a routine background check as part of the job application. It was Wright who went to the Police Station in Lawrenceville, Georgia, to get the Background Check carried out! When Wright returned the following day to collect the paperwork he was arrested on a warrant issued in Missouri in 1985 for second-degree murder committed way back in 1976!
If only someone in the last 24 years had been suspicious enough of Wright to have carried out a Background Check on him, just like Liza Campbell did with Garrido. Perhaps Background Checks should form part of every job application?
