Background Check: First Garrido Now Wright

Phillip and Nancy Garrido from Antioch, CA were apprehended recently as a direct consequence of a background check. In concert with a mixture of a Mum’s instincts and suspicions as well .

Garrido with his two daughters in tow spoke to Liza Campbell, Events Organiser, University of California, Berkeley about hiring the facilities at the University to hold a meeting there that he wanted to stage. Liza became suspicious and carried out a Background Check on him. She found that Phillip Garrido was on parole after a violent rape conviction and was on the registered sex offenders list.

Liza was unable to conclude their discussion that day because of a prior appointment and so asked Garrido to return the following day. Meanwhile with the results back from the background check Liza asked Ally Jacobs, Police Officer, to sit in with her at the following meeting the next day .

During this meeting between Liza, Ally, Garrido and his two daughters, Ally’s motherly instincts kicked in and told her that something just wasn't right with the two teenage daughters. After the meeting Ally appraised Garrido’s parole officer of the meeting and of his two daughters.

Back came the shocking news. She felt sick to her stomach. Garrido didn't have any daughters!
In the case of the abduction of Jaycee Lee Dugard from near her home in South Lake Tahoe, California, in 1991, the Garrido’s now faced a combined total of 29 felony charges.

Garrido is held in custody at the El Dorado County Jail in Placerville, California, as he and his wife Nancy Garrido await trial .

This is what a woman’s suspicion, a Background Check and a mother’s instincts can do. Hooray for background checks and suspicion. How great was that result!

Our next story doesn't involve a woman’s suspicions or a mother’s instincts. It depends simply on a Background Check bringing someone to justice .

You couldn't make this up. Johnny Wright walks into the Police Station in Lawrenceville, Georgia, and applied for a background check be carried out on him. This formed part of a job application for a driver’s job in Atlanta. He popped in the next day to pay the 15 dollars and collect the paperwork but found himself under arrest. An arrest warrant from 1985 had come to light in connection with the second-degree murder of Rebecca A Doisy from way back in 1976!

If only someone in the last 24 years had been suspicious enough of Wright to have carried out a Background Check on him, just like Liza Campbell did with Garrido. Perhaps Background Checks should form part of every job application?
