Background Check: First Phillip Garrido Then Wright

A background check in the end nailed Phillip and Nancy Garrido. Plus some female suspicion and a mother’s protective instincts.

Garrido with his two daughters in tow discussed with Liza Campbell, Events Organiser, University of California, Berkeley about hiring the facilities at the University to hold a meeting there that he wanted to organise. Liza became suspicious and carried out a Background Check on him. She found that Phillip Garrido was on parole after a serious sex conviction and was on the registered sex offenders list.

Liza was unable to conclude their meeting that day because of a prior appointment and so asked Garrido to return the following day. Meanwhile with the results back from the background check Liza Campbell asked Ally Jacobs, Police Officer, to sit in with her at the following meeting the next day .

During this meeting between Liza, Ally, Garrido and his two daughters, Ally’s motherly instincts kicked in and told her that something just wasn’t right with the two girls. After the meeting Ally told Garrido’s parole officer of the meeting and of his two daughters.

Back came the shocking news. She felt sick to her stomach. Garrido didn’t have any daughters!

In the case of the kidnapping of Jaycee Lee Dugard from the school bus stop within sight of her home in South Lake Tahoe, California, in 1991, the Garrido’s now faced a combined total of 29 felony charges.

El Dorado County Jail in Placerville, CA, detains Phillip Garrido while he awaits trial.

This is what a woman’s suspicion, a Background Check and a mother’s instincts can do. Hooray for background checks and suspicion. How great was that result!

Our next story doesn’t involve a woman’s suspicions or a mother’s instincts. It rests simply on a Background Check bringing someone to justice .

In 1976 Johnny Wright was detained for the murder of Rebecca A Doisy but released because of insufficient evidence. In 1985 a warrant was issued for his arrest in connection with that murder when evidence against him was provided by a witness. Wright disappeared off the radar screen for 24 years. A few days ago Johnny Wright walked into the Police Station in Lawrenceville, Georgia and requested that a background check be conducted on himself. He was quickly arrested. The background check was part of the job requirement in the application for a driver’s job in Atlanta. Imagine the shock of all involved when the arrest warrant showed up from way back in 1985! Johnny Wright now waits in custody

If only someone in the last 24 years had been suspicious enough of Wright to have carried out a Background Check on him, just like Liza Campbell did with Garrido. Perhaps Background Checks should form part of every job application?
