Background Check: 1st Garrido Now Johnny Wright

Phillip and Nancy Garrido from Antioch, CA were apprehended recently as a direct consequence of a background check. Together with a mixture of a Mum’s instincts and suspicions as well .

Phillip Garrido with his two daughters in tow approached Liza Campbell, Events Organiser, University of California, Berkeley, about staging an event at the campus. Liza Campbell became suspicious and carried out a Background Check on him. His record showed him to be on parole for a rape conviction and to be a registered sex offender.

Liza was unable to conclude their meeting that day because of a prior appointment and so asked Garrido to return the following day. Meanwhile with the results back from the background check Liza Campbell asked Ally Jacobs, Police Officer, to sit in with her at the following meeting the next day .

Alison’s motherly instincts told her something was wrong with the girls and rang Garrido’sparole officer .

Back came the shocking news. She felt sick to her stomach. Garrido didn’t have any daughters!
Now Phillip and Nancy Garrido are looking at a combined total of 29 felony charges, involving forcible abduction, rape and false imprisonment in connection with the kidnapping of Jaycee Lee Dugard in 1991.

At the El Dorado County Superior Court in Placerville, California, Superior Court Judge Douglas Phimister set bail for Phillip Garrido at 30 million dollars while he awaits trial.

This is what a woman’s suspicion, a Background Check and a mother’s instincts can do. Hooray for background checks and suspicion. How great was that result!

Now we hear of one more great success story of a Background Check bringing someone to justice but this one doesn’t have the ingredients of a woman’s suspicions or a mother’s instincts. In fact this story is so amazing you just can’t make it up .

In 1976 Johnny Wright was suspected of the murder of Rebecca A Doisy but released because of insufficient evidence. In 1985 a warrant was issued for his arrest in connection with that murder when a statement was made by a witness linking him with the murder. Wright disappeared off the radar screen for 24 years. Last week Johnny Wright walked into the Police Station in Lawrenceville, Georgia and asked that a background check be conducted on himself. He was promptly arrested. The background check was part of the job requirement in the application for a driver’s job in Atlanta. Imagine the shock of all involved when the arrest warrant appeared from way back in 1985! Johnny Wright now waits in custody

If only someone in the last 24 years had been suspicious enough of Wright to have carried out a Background Check on him, just like Liza Campbell did with Garrido. Perhaps Background Checks should form part of every job application?
