Background Check: Results in The Arrest Of Johnny Wright

Just a while ago we heard how a combination of a woman’s suspicions, a background check and a mother’s instincts resulted in the detention of Phillip Garrido from Antioch, California .

Phillip Garrido with his two daughters in tow spoke to Liza Campbell, Events Organiser, University of California, Berkeley about hiring a Hall at the University to hold a meeting there that he wanted to organise. Liza became suspicious and carried out a Background Check on him. She found that Phillip Garrido was on parole after a vicious rape conviction and was on the registered sex offenders list.

Liza was unable to conclude their discussion that day because of a prior appointment and so asked Garrido to return the following day. Meanwhile with the results back from the background check Liza Campbell asked Ally Jacobs, Police Officer, to sit in with her at the following meeting the next day .

At this meeting Alison spoke separately to the two girls. Her motherly instincts told her something was strange about the girls. She telephoned Phillip Garrido’s parole officer about the meeting with Garrido and his two daughters .

Back came the shocking news. She felt sick to her stomach. Garrido didn’t have any daughters!
In the case of the kidnapping of Jaycee Lee Dugard from the school bus stop within sight of her home in South Lake Tahoe, California, in 1991, the Garrido’s now faced a combined total of 29 felony charges.

El Dorado County Jail in Placerville, CA, holds Phillip Garrido while he awaits trial.

This is what a woman’s suspicion, a Background Check and a mother’s instincts can do. Hooray for background checks and suspicion. How great was that result!

This next story doesn’t include a woman’s suspicions or a mother’s instincts. It rests purely on a Background Check bringing someone to justice .

You couldn’t invent this. Johnny Wright walks into the Police Station in Lawrenceville, Georgia, and requested a background check be carried out on him. This formed part of a job application for a driver’s job in Atlanta. He came back the next day to pay the 15 dollars and collect the paperwork but found himself behind bars. An arrest warrant from 1985 had come to light in connection with the second-degree murder of Rebecca A Doisy committed way back in 1976!

If only someone in the last 24 years had been suspicious enough of Wright to have carried out a Background Check on him, just like Liza Campbell did with Garrido. Perhaps Background Checks should form part of every job application?
