Jaycee: why so prolonged ?

The questions are only just beginning into the riddle surrounding Jaycee Lee Dugard. The initial question is how did Phillip Craig Garrido, 58, and Nancy Garrido, 55, get away with this for so long and not get caught? This disquieting story awakens the need for all of us to be vigilant. Including the authorities.

Everybody involved in this case, probation officers, police and neighbors, will look back and rue the fact they did not do more. My wife just said to me that at least we can find out who is a registered sex offender and where they are living in our neighborhood . And she thanked God that Ally Jacobs, Campus Security Officer, University of California, Berkeley, had the presence of mind to report Garrido to the probation services. It is only her alertness that lead to these crimes being discovered and ended.

There are too many of these people in our society who could otherwise hide themselves and hide their background from us. We have a right to know who they are, where they live, what they do. Now the Probation Department and Police Department will both do a lot of soul searching as to why their visits to Garrido’s property never resulted in the children’s discovery.
