Jaycee: what went so tragically wrong?

Jaycee Lee Dugard. Lots of questions need addressing in this bewildering situation. The main question is how did Phillip Craig Garrido, 58, and Nancy Garrido, 55, get away with this for so long and not get discovered? This event brings home to us with a jolt our need to be on our guard. Including the authorities.

Everybody involved in this case, probation officers, police and neighbors, will look back and rue the fact they did not do more. My wife just said to me that at least we can find out who is a registered sex offender and where they are living in our neighborhood . And she thanked God that Ally Jacobs, Campus Security Officer, University of California, Berkeley, had the presence of mind to report Garrido to the probation services. This finally brought the tragedy of this appalling case to light and to an end. Well done Ally.

There are too many of these people in our society who could otherwise hide themselves and hide their background from us. We have a right to know who they are, where they live, what they do. Now the Probation Department and Police Department will both do a lot of self examination as to why their visits to Garrido’s house never resulted in the children’s discovery.
